Comparing Different Brands of Popcorn

Discovering Great Brands

The fact is, not all popcorn is the equal. Different brands of popcorn offer different tastes, textures, colors, shapes, sizes, and hull content. These are the traits that make popcorn such an intriguing food with such a wide appeal.

As a popcorn lover looking for the best brands of popcorn, tune out the advertising and concentrate on taste! Flashy boxes or claims of “gourmet” mean little if you don’t like how the popcorn tastes or feels in your mouth.

If you have “standards” about what you buy, throw them out and start over. Some of the best brands sit in every grocery store across the nation and there’s no mention of “Premium” or “Gourmet". Being honest with yourself about what you like is the key to finding different brands of popcorn that you’ll love.

This list of different brands of popcorn will grow and grow as time goes on. Please remember that Primo-Popcorn.com is not affiliated with any popcorn brand! The reviews are honest and unbiased.

Brands of Unpopped Kernels

Amish Country Gourmet White Popcorn
2 lbs in a non-resealable poly-bag for $6

The tastes, smells, and especially the texture make this a truly gourmet popcorn. Although it tastes great with salt alone, I would enjoy this popcorn with a cheese seasoning or sour cream & chive seasoning. It’s so tender and light that seasonings woul. . .

Arrowhead Mills Organic Yellow Popcorn

1.75lb poly-bag (NOT RESEALABLE) for $3

The nutty true popcorn taste of this organic brand makes it perfect for guests with a discerning palate. There’s no need for flavorings or even butter here, just salt and enjoy.

Bob’s Red Mill All Natural White Popcorn
1lb 11oz poly-bag (NOT RESEALABLE) for $4

These large white kernels popped up to be very tender, especially for flakes this large.

Black Jewel Premium Popcorn
28.35 oz in a quart jar that can be reclosed for $10.50.

These gems come in a quart jar so you can see just how black this popcorn brand really is. When popped, it makes small, extremely tasty popcorn with a great nutty taste. This is even more tasty than Arrowhead Mills Organic popcorn. There’s no need to butter this snack, just salt and enjoy.

Eden Organics Organic Yellow Popcorn
1lb 4 oz resealable poly/foil bag for $3

This organic brand pops huge and has a taste that sets it apart. If you want to go organic and only want one bag of popcorn in the house, this is a real contender.

Paloma Roja Red Popcorn
1lb Cellophane wrapped for $7 at Dean and Deluca.

Tiny kernels of super tender white corn sounded like machine gun rounds going off in the Whirley Pop. This popcorn is visually stunning both as unpopped kernels and popped flakes with intensely contrasting white and burgundy hull. Although tender, the taste just wasn’t there. It was a popcorn that looked great, but didn’t deliver when it came to real corn taste. At $7, I’m pretty disappointed.

Jolly Time White, Yellow, Organic Yellow
2 lb resealable poly-bags for around $2.50

The popcorn of my mom’s kitchen, I always thought she bought it because it was more affordable than “gourmet”, but I was wrong. This family owned popcorn company is in business because their popcorn has real flavor and works as both an eating popcorn and a balanced popcorn to use in recipes.

Natural Value 100% Organic Popcorn
2lbs of popcorn in a thick resealable poly-bag for $6.

This brand popped huge white flakes, mostly butterfly shaped with minimal hull content. Great for all around eating, but with its very large flakes, this tender white popcorn would be excellent for flavored popcorn balls or chocolate popcorn.

Orville Redenbacher Original
Multiple sizes, from 1 – 8 lbs

This popcorn lives up to its advertising as it pops very large. For recipes or general eating, this popcorn suits almost all of your popcorn needs.
